A reporter at a local NBC affiliate station in Memphis grew emotional while covering the aftermath of several shootings that left four people dead on Wednesday.
Joyce Peterson, a reporter with WMC Action News 5, choked up while warning the public to shelter in place following the deadly incident. At the time, the alleged shooter was still at large.
“Stay inside. Tell the people you love — call them, text them, email them. Tell them to stay inside. This is not a joke, this is an extremely dangerous situation,” Peterson said.
A tearful Peterson paused before continuing with her unfiltered response to the tragic situation.
“Memphis is tired right now. Yeah, I’m good, I’m with you all. Memphis is tired right now,” she added. “The Eliza Fletcher kidnapping and abduction and murder, the other crimes we’ve had this year — it’s difficult right now,” she said.
“Bear with me. It’s a very nerve-wracking night, it’s been a very difficult week,” she added.
“They’re going to find this guy. Until they do, stay inside.”

Police later arrested Ezekiel Kelly, 19, in connection to a series of shooting that killed four people and injured three others in the Memphis area. Kelly, who had a criminal record that included attempted first-degree murder, faces several felony charges.
Kelly livestreamed one of the shootings on Facebook during the alleged spree that began just before 1 a.m. local time and concluded with his arrest at approximately 9:30 p.m.
“This has been a horrific week for the city of Memphis,” Memphis Police Chief CJ David said during a press conference.
Peterson also referenced the kidnapping and murder of Fletcher, a 34-year-old mother of two who went missing while jogging in the early morning hours of Sept. 2. Police later confirmed that a body found in Memphis had been identified as that of the billionaire heiress.
Authorities have charged Cleotha Abston, 38, with first-degree murder in connection to Fletcher’s disappearance.
