Pavel Durov, founder of Telegram, suggested the creation of a new marketplace that would allow users to use smart-contracts similar to NFT to transfer usernames. He said that the new feature would likely be hosted on the Durov-designed TON Blockchain.

Telegram could launch a new marketplace that allows users to transfer usernames using “NFT-like smart contracts,” Pavel Durov, founder of Telegram, said in a message to the platform.

Durov posted Monday that he could visualize how successful Telegram, with its 700 million users, would be if they put reserved @ usernames and group links up for auction. All four-letter usernames, in addition to the millions of catchy @storm and @royal t.me addresses could be sold.”

TON jumped 10% shortly after Durov sent the message. Durov did not respond immediately to our request for comment.

Durov is interested in the TON blockchain, which he created, to host decentralized transactions. He cited the success TON had with domain and wallet names such as wallet.ton, which was sold for 215,250 Toncoin (about $260,000), and casino.ton, which was about $244,000.

Durov stated, “Let’s hope we can add a bit of Web 3.0 Telegram in the next weeks.”

He said that in addition to @storm and @royal t.me addresses, all four-letter usernames could also be available for sale such as @bank or @club, and @game.
