Alicia Silverstone‘s character Cher Horowitz’s classic yellow and black plaid jacket and pleated miniskirt she wore in the opening scenes of 1995’s Clueless remains one of the most classic and stylish outfits in movie history. Even though the film celebrated the 27th anniversary of its release on July 20, 2022, stars are still paying homage to the look.

Cher’s timeless outfit was made by Dolce & Gabbana, and Alicia broke down the entire ensemble in an August 2020 interview with Vogue, along with how the sunny yellow look almost didn’t happen.

“At first, you see Cher is wearing a plaid Dolce & Gabbana yellow and black checkered skirt, white Mary Jane shoes, white knee-high socks, and then, there’s a white T-shirt and a yellow cardigan. And then on top of it, of course, the suit jacket,” Alicia recalled.

“There were three options for this opening scene: a blue version, a red version and the yellow version,” she continued, revealing that ultimately director Amy Heckerling and costume designer Mona May chose the yellow option because “they felt that it was most appropriate for the scene.”

“It’s a nod to a schoolgirl uniform, but in an elevated, chic, very high fashioned way,” Alicia explained, adding, “And it’s so absurd. Immediately, you’re transformed, you know the world you’re in because that’s not how kids dress to go to school. It’s just not. But somehow it just feels right, and it works.”

“It sort of had a grunge edge to it because it still was like yellow and black plaid but putting it on a little girl made it so different,” the actress continued, adding that the outfit has taken on “a life of its own.” Alicia noted, “You see it every year on the runway. And I think it’s so interesting that people are so interested in it, and it continues to live.”

Alicia’s observation is quite prescient, as Dior’s Autumn/Winter 2022 show at Paris Fashion Week featured the iconic yellow and black plaid pattern in a variety of jacket and skirt combinations. Actress Natalie Portman wore a very Cher-inspired version with a blazer and mini-skirt for her Thor: Love and Thunder publicity junket in July 2022. But she gave it a very adult twist with an ab-baring black bandeau top underneath the jacket and subbed out the white stockings and Mary Janes for black Doc Martens boots.
